{"id":11631,"date":"2017-08-29T12:30:03","date_gmt":"2017-08-29T12:30:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.footprintnetwork.org\/?p=11631\/"},"modified":"2018-01-02T22:03:19","modified_gmt":"2018-01-02T22:03:19","slug":"el-poder-ecologico-our-colombian-partnership-to-advance-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.footprintnetwork.org\/2017\/08\/29\/el-poder-ecologico-our-colombian-partnership-to-advance-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"El Poder Ecol\u00f3gico: Our Colombian partnership to advance sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This July, Global Footprint Network was fortunate to host government representatives from Nari\u00f1o, Colombia, for a two-week work session at our offices in Oakland in support of their effort to transform their province into a green economy.<\/p>\n<p>After decades of civil war, peace agreements between the Colombian government and the FARC (recently renamed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/08\/farc-rebels-reborn-revolutionary-force-party-170831230246681.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Common Alternative Revolutionary Force<\/a>) have opened up new possibilities, and Nari\u00f1o is eager to build a new future based on their strengths, including its ecological advantages. Under the leadership of <a href=\"http:\/\/xn--nario-rta.gov.co\/inicio\/index.php\/gobernacion\/gobernador\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gov. Camilo Romero Galeano<\/a> (who is also Colombia\u2019s Green Alliance Party co-president), Nari\u00f1o is positioned to be at the forefront of a new green economy in Colombia.<\/p>\n<p>The subsecretary of Environmental Management and Green Growth of Nari\u00f1o, Ricardo Mora, reached out to Global Footprint Network for technical support about using the Ecological Footprint and other sustainability metrics to advance strategic initiatives in the Nari\u00f1o province. Global Footprint Network staff are working in close partnership with Nari\u00f1o representatives to help them capitalize on the momentum of these historic events.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-11712\" src=\"http:\/\/www.footprintnetwork.org\/content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/narino_blog_v2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.footprintnetwork.org\/content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/narino_blog_v2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.footprintnetwork.org\/content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/narino_blog_v2-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>On <a href=\"http:\/\/www.overshootday.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth Overshoot Day<\/a>, the Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development in Nari\u00f1o, Ramiro Estacio, <a href=\"http:\/\/nari\u00f1o.gov.co\/inicio\/index.php\/sala-de-prensa\/noticias\/1002-gobernacion-se-suma-a-llamado-para-contrarrestar-el-impacto-ambiental\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joined us along with organizations around the world<\/a> to call for the reduction of indiscriminate use of natural resources. Mora also underscored our joint efforts, saying, \u201c[the MOU with Global Footprint Network] isn\u2019t simply to carry out scientific studies on Nari\u00f1o\u2019s Ecological Footprint and biocapacity, but also to direct our province with concrete actions on how to build a green economy that takes ecological limits into account and move back the date of Earth Overshoot Day, so that our actions with natural resources in the region are sustainable.\u201d Our\u00a0Nari\u00f1o colleagues also hung a banner of the Earth in honor of Overshoot Day (pictured right).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11661\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11661\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11661 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.footprintnetwork.org\/content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/narinovisit_crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.footprintnetwork.org\/content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/narinovisit_crop.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.footprintnetwork.org\/content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/narinovisit_crop-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11661\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Global Footprint Network CEO Mathis Wackernagel with Ricardo Mora, Nari\u00f1o\u2019s Undersecretary of Environmental Management and Green Growth; Dr. Ivan Felipe Benavides, of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development; and David Lin, Global Footprint Network Research Director.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Just a month earlier, Mora and Dr. Ivan Felipe Benavides, scientific adviser for the Environment and Sustainable Development Office at Nari\u00f1o, spent two weeks in our Oakland offices participating in lectures, exercises, and discussion, starting with underlying major concepts of sustainability and their critical role as part of larger frameworks for monitoring and achieving societal well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Natural scientists by training, Mora and Benavides quickly drilled down to the scientific theory and technical details of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.footprintnetwork.org\/tag\/stateprovince\/\">sub-national Ecological Footprint assessments<\/a>, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.footprintnetwork.org\/resources\/data\/\">National Footprint Accounts<\/a>, input-output analysis, and bottom up-top down approaches to Footprint accounting. By the end, our colleagues had developed a game plan to apply a sustainability monitoring framework for the transformation of Nari\u00f1o to a green economy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The math and the essentials of the Ecological Footprint are very simple to understand, and the calculations very straightforward. It&#8217;s all about understanding that the capacity of our planet to produce ecological assets (biocapacity) does not have an infinite growth as our current economic system seems to assume, but its rather a cycle with spatial and temporal limits,&#8221; said Benavides. &#8220;However our greater challenge is to take this information available to our people and translate it into strategic actions to live well, within these limits. We want people in Nari\u00f1o to live great lives with the big ecological power that we have.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During their stay, Mora and Benavides also taught us much about their work laying a foundation for a thriving green economy, and of Nari\u00f1o\u2019s incredible natural wealth. Located in southwestern Colombia, their province has extraordinary natural beauty and is a biological hot spot\u2013home to more than 5,000 species of plants and animals.
