What if tackling climate change started with sharing a meal?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Or at least the idea of one?<\/span><\/p>\n

That was the spirit behind <\/span>Breaking Bread, Building Futures<\/b>, an online event co-organised by <\/span>Area Europa<\/span><\/i><\/a> and <\/span>Global Footprint Network<\/span><\/i> as part of <\/span>The Food Odyssey<\/span><\/i> project.<\/span><\/p>\n

Held on <\/span>16 October 2025<\/b>, to celebrate <\/span>World Food Day<\/b>, the webinar<\/a> brought together European initiatives working at the intersection of food, climate, and education.<\/span><\/p>\n

Featured as a <\/span>European Climate Pact Satellite Event<\/b><\/a>, an <\/b>Erasmus Days event<\/b><\/a>,<\/b> and included on the <\/span>FAO interactive World Food Day map<\/b><\/a> and on the <\/b>Education for Climate platform<\/b><\/a>, the session gathered two dozen participants online for one shared purpose: to learn, exchange, and imagine together how education can empower communities to act for a sustainable food future.<\/span><\/p>\n

A table set for collaboration<\/b><\/h3>\n

\u201cBy breaking bread together in this virtual space, we aim to connect projects, spark new synergies, share good practices, and explore how education can empower communities to act,\u201d explained Giulia Lombardo Pijola, president of Area Europa, who hosted the meeting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The host:<\/span> The Food Odyssey<\/b> <\/a>\u2013 an Erasmus+ KA2 VET education project that combines storytelling, play, and innovation to teach about sustainable food systems through game-based learning.<\/span><\/p>\n

SPOON<\/span><\/a> \u2013 a Horizon project connecting citizens, researchers, industries, civil society organisations, and policymakers to co-create a fairer, healthier, and more sustainable food future.<\/span><\/p>\n

FOODSHIFT Pathways<\/span><\/a> \u2013 an Erasmus+ KA2 School Education project helping schools drive food system transformation through creative STEAM learning and real-world action.<\/span><\/p>\n

SOSFood Project<\/span><\/a> \u2013 a Horizon project working to make our food systems more sustainable and secure, harnessing the potential of Artificial Intelligence technologies.<\/span><\/p>\n

HIATUS<\/span><\/a> \u2013 an Erasmus+ KA2 School Education project that implemented the \u201cservice design thinking\u201d methodology within schools, in close cooperation with teaching staff.<\/span><\/p>\n

PROchef project<\/span><\/a> \u2013 an Erasmus+ KA2 VET project aimed at enhancing the skills of chefs and kitchen staff in the context of promoting a protein shift in institutional kitchens.<\/span><\/p>\n

LCA CARE<\/span><\/a> \u2013\u00a0 an Alliances Partnerships for Innovation project, focused on fostering eco-innovation in SMEs within the agri-food sector.<\/span><\/p>\n

FoodConnect<\/span><\/a> \u2013 LIFE programme project designed to address the critical issue of food waste in the Southern EU region<\/span><\/p>\n

Shared insights from the table<\/b><\/h3>\n

The discussion revealed how diverse approaches to food system transformation can reinforce one another. Three key themes emerged: making complexity tangible through creative learning, harnessing data and technology for systemic change, and building bridges across sectors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Breaking Bread event provided an excellent platform for inspiring projects to exchange best practices and explore opportunities for collaboration \u2014 elements that lie at the heart of European projects and are essential for achieving systemic transformation together.\u201d<\/span>

\u201cWe aim to reach actors across the entire food value chain and gather data from each step. The use of AI-based technologies and the access to private, underexploited or unused data will allow us to upgrade the decision-making processes and create more efficient, sustainable systems that are fair to everyone.\u201d<\/span>

Katerina Riviou, from <\/span>FOODSHIFT Pathways<\/span><\/i>, surprised the audience by sharing another inspiring initiative,\u00a0 the <\/span>CLEVERFOOD<\/b> project, and its travelling <\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/i>CLEVERFOOD for Everyone<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u201d<\/span><\/i> exhibition, which brings the complexity of global food systems to life across Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps the most powerful thread running through all presentations was the recognition that transformation requires working across boundaries\u2014between sectors, disciplines, and communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

This collaborative and creative spirit\u2014open, curious, and grounded in shared learning\u2014was exactly what the event celebrated.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because sharing ideas, like sharing food, brings us closer to building the futures we want.<\/span><\/p>\n
